|This is a genuine first state shin hanga Japanese woodblock print by Ishiwata Koitsu (Born 1897) titled "Twilight at Imamiya Street, Choshi", dated Showa 7 (1931). Theis print was published by Watanabe Shozaburo and bears the Watanabe "C" cartouche (1929-1942). The print is a shin hanga masterpiece, the photos do not do justice to the quiet peaceful feel of this print.
The print is in fine condition. Excellent impression and registration, good color and excellent bleedthrough. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Print size is 10.25" x 15.25".
|This Japanese woodcut print is by Koitsu and published by Watanabe. It depicts a lovely twilight scene with people walking home. It is a full sheet with full margins, approx. 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. I believe that this is a very early state, perhaps the first state for this print, but I am not positive. The print is in good condition with wonderful color.
This print (along with 9 others that I am offering) came out of a wonderful estate full of beautiful Japanese objects. The original owners had lived in Japan from the 1930's.
Koitsu, Ishiwata-Twilight at Imamiya Street - Choshi.jpg is:
Twilight Imai Street, Choshi
This print was published by Watanabe Shozaburo, of Tokyo. Watanabe's use of publisher's seals has been well documented here (http://www.hanga.com/publishers/watanabe/). Since your print was originally published in 1932, it could be considered to be original if it had the B, C, D, or E seal in the margin. I have an image of the same print in the book "The new wave" with the C seal.
