Notes (1st edition)Dating of 1952, written on the original first-edition folders, has been confirmed by a collector. In regards to this particular scene, "Late Summer", a collector in Finland as stated "My mother in law got it from a Japanese Olympic delegate in Helsinki 1952". As the most common dating of this series is *circa* 1953, I think it is now most likely that this series was first published in 1952. See my article at Ohmi Gallery for details of this series and the various editions.

Artist: Shimura Tatsumi
Format: Large Oban tate-e: 10" x 7.25"

Subject: A bijin wearing a Yukata (summer cotton kimono). Beside her, three Uchiwa (round fan) are seen. One of them is decorated with the 'Red Fuji' by Hokusai. "Late Summer" cleverly alludes to Hokusai's famous ukiyo-e print Red Fuji pictured on the woman's fan. After a solo exhibition on his sixtieth birthday in 1967, Shimura devoted his career entirely to Nihonga, or Japanese style painting. From the limited edition. In original folder as issued.

Publisher: Japanese Print Institute

Date: 1953

Condition: Full size with large margins (not fully shown in the scanned image). Fine state.

Colour: Superb colors.

Impression: Excellent impression of the 1st edition with gauffrage. Later editions lack the red seals in the left margin (see The Female Image pp181-3)

Other Notes: Some toning, damages and tears to folder.
A single thin red seal, so this is most likely the first or second edition. Dating proof to 1952 from a collector in Finland:

"My mother in law got it from a Japanese Olympic delegate in Helsinki 1952."

This is a gorgeous woodblock print by shin hanga master Tatsumi Shimura; it is to my eye the standout bijin-ga print of the 20th century: a beautiful girl in a superbly rendered kimono, and a fan with Hokusai's Red Fuji (a very famous early woodblock print) at her side. The print is oban size, about 15 x 10 plus large margins. It is in pristine condition, never framed. Signed and sealed with the artist's red seal upper right. Wonderful color, impression and condition, a true masterpiece!

This is an original large oban size shin hanga Japanese woodblock print by Shimura Tatsumi (1907-1980) titled "Natsu Takete" or "Late Summer" from the series Gendai Bijin Fuzoku Gotai (Five Figures of Modern Beauties), dated Showa 28 (1953). The print is sealed in the image. Nakagawa carver's seal and Ono printer's seal in right margin. Title is embossed at bottom center margin. Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho publishers seal in lower margin. Fine condition, color and impression. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print has not been setdown, trimmed, and has never been mounted. See "The Female Image 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties", page 183 for this print. Large oban size measures 11.25" x 18.25" inches.

HIgh Summer by Shimura Tatsumi. The most popular of Tatsumi's designs. This was probably a trial print in that some of the colors are definitely lighter than the other Tatsumi prints I have seen. It is also possible that the print has faded a bit, but not all of the colors are lighter. The margins are trimmed, but the seals are all intact. It measures 15 3/4" x 111/4". The impression and condition are very good. There is no toning or foxing.
