Japanese Woodblock by Kiyochika ‘Fireworks at Ryogoku’ (1880)

Bold and colorful nightime fireworks Meiji era woodblock print by Kiyochika Kobayashi (1847-1915) titled “Ryogoku Hanabi no Zu” (translates as “Fireworks at Ryogoku”) and margin-dated as “Meiji 13” (or 1880). Printed from superbly and accurately re-cut blocks shortly after WWII by publisher Mariashbo (note the single “katakana” character, “Ma,” just below the margin cartouche). Circa 1950’s.

Superb print—wonderfully illuminated scene for which Kiyochika is well known. The workmanship in printing is quite good—nice gradation of colors (“bokashi”) used throughout print. Bold, bright colors, and in very good to excellent condition—print has glue residues across top verso edge apparently where removed from folder. Image measures 8 1/8 x 12 5/8 inches.
