Woodblock by Kiyochika ‘1000 Poles at Ryogoku Bridge’ (1880)

Evocative Meiji-era riverscene woodblock print by Kiyochika Kobayashi (1847-1915) titled “Senbon Kui Ryogoku-bashi” (translates as “One Thousand Poles at Ryogoku Bridge”) and margin-dated as “Meiji 13” (or 1880). This print is illustrated twice in the wonderfully descriptive book “Kiyochika, Artist of Meiji Japan” (Henry Smith, 1988) as Plates #21 and #80 (pages 34 and 71). Printed from superbly and accurately re-cut blocks shortly after WWII. Circa 1950’s.

Superb print—nicely illuminated morning scene for which Kiyochika is well known. The workmanship in printing is quite good—superbly executed gradation of colors (“bokashi”) used throughout print. Bold, bright colors, and in excellent condition. Image measures 8 1/8 x 12 ¾ inches.
