Large Fish Series: The Grey Mullet

Artist: Hiroshige I
Format: Oban yoko-e: 10" x 14.5"

Subject: A large grey mullet (bora, mugil Japonicus) lying, head to right, on sprays of Camellia flowers, and a pink root; narrow pink band above, gradated blue at base. Mica on fish scales. Two verses above, one (translated in BM Catalogue) 'How amusing to see on Tago coast the mullet slide down the slope of Fuji's reflection in the water'. Condition: Fine colors. Full size with margins. Very minor creases and marks. Generally exceptionally fine state of preservation.

Impression: Fine impression of the second state of the first edition, with gauffrage and extensive use of mica on the fish scales. With Publisher's and Kiwame seals printed in red.
