According to Stevenson, the earliest edition of this series has a descriptive cartouche with three diagonal colored areas. These cartouches contain the name of the print (actually, the "type" of woman illustrated in the design) as well as the era in which the image is set. Adjacent to the three color cartouche is the series cartouche, which looks like a tassled cypresswood signboard. Later impressions have a two color cartouche, and even later printings come with a solid grey cartouche.
