The Stokes Collection

From Aaron

First, I have recently obtained a copy of the chuban print published by
Doi: Tokaido Yazugahara (Yaizu-no-hara). My copy has harada/yokoi seals
and, interestingly, a different date (showa 12) and somewhat different
color scheme than the one on your site.

Koitsu-TaizuNoHara-Tokkaido- Eiichi_Harada_Seki- 2.jpg is:

Yaizu in Snow on the Tokado by Tsuchiya Koitsu. Genuine woodblock print dated January Showa 11 (1936). Later impression from original blocks. Fine condition. 11.5 x 8.0 inches. Date in right margin. Title, Koitsu characters and red shin seal in lower right of image. Doi publisher's seal, Harada carver's seal and Seki printer's seal in left margin.

Koitsu-TaizuNoHara-Tokkaido- Eiichi_Harada_Seki.jpg is:

"Yaizu" - 1936

Chuban

Image size 11.5" x 8"
Condition Pristine. Never laid down. Strong bleedthrough to verso. No folds, no tears, no creases, no foxing.

Authenticated by Master Koitsui's signature, Doi Eiichi seal, watermark and the all-important double-offset Harada/Seki seal. Most prints seen in recent times carry the Hamano printer's seal, signifying a more recent print. This print carries the earlier Seki seal. Seki worked for Doi for 4 decades prior to 1993. We would estimate this print was struck circa 1980 or earlier

JAPANESE WOOD BLOCK PRINT MILL HOUSE, WINTER SCENE. Beautiful blending of colors in this wood block print. Winter scenes are much more difficult to find than others. I really like the water falling off the mill house wheel. I was told this piece and many others I purchased were obtained by the original owner ( the seller's father) were obtained in Japan in the 1960's, however I don't really know the age of the wood block prints. The print is signed in the lower right corner. The back sticker has a "Y" over a "G" and other characters I cannot identify. Some of the other prints say "SHINAGAWA", but this one does not. Size of the actual print is 7" by 9 -7/8". The frame is 12" by 15 -7/8.
