Jpanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu of a café at night. I was able to get some information from a local expert. It is done in the 1930's and has the Harada/ Yokui mark on the lower left, and was published by Doi Hangaten and has the Doi watermark (see picture). The artist's name and red stamp are on the lower left part of the print. The print is in good condition with no holes or folds and has the original margins. There is a .25 inch line of masking tape residue on the right edge of the print as it looks like it was framed before. This line would not show when framed.

HI
I was wondering if you could confirm that these two prints are original 1934
and 1940 woodblock prints of Koitsu (NEZU SHRINE & TEA SHOP)… I acquired
these from my father who was stationed in Japan in the 1950s (I was born at
Tachikawa AFB in 56) …
I will send as two email since these are large scans … I scanned the
images in two parts each … let me know if you want another detail scan of
a particular area

Very nice Woodblock print. I took it out of the frame to see condition. It had been glued or attached to a piece of cardboard. So I did not bother reseaching it any further. I don’t know how did it . If anyone cares to share this info that is OK.There is very slight toning visable were the matting touched the print. The colors are dark and bold. Darker then it looks in the photos. It measures 10 3/8" by 15 5/8"…………

Tsuchiya Koitsu Teahouse in Kiyomizudo Woodblock

A beautiful 1930's print from a woodblock by Koitsu Tsuchiya. The Japanese title is Kiyomizudo in Ueno and the English title is Teahouse in Kiyomizudo. This print carries the Doi seal that means "true" in the lower left hand corner of the print. The size is 28 X 41 cm or 11 X 17. Written in pencil at the lower margin of the print is 32 X 46 and I assume that was a size for the mat.

There is not a publisher or carver seal on the left margin and this usually means that it is a 1950's print from the original woodblock by a publisher loosely affiliated with Doi. However, Doi sometimes allowed his printers to print their own copies of these prints so your guess is as good as mine. Further, the printer and carver seals are not part of the original woodblock. They are put on after the print is completed. During the Second World War, there were prints made without the seals. There is Japanese writing along the margin of the right side of the print and is most likely the title of the piece.

The condition is excellent with vivid colors and is on Japanese paper. It comes with a paper mat. There are two tiny splits in the paper about 1/8 inch in size. There is a strip at the top on the back where paper tape was used to tape the picture to the mat.
Kiyomizu Kannon Temple

This print- Beautiful night image of this famous temple in Kyoto. The huge wooden temple busiling glowing in the soft moonlight, a woman in traditional kimono is approaching a tea stand. Wonderful scene that transports the viewer to this special place.

From the collection of a Doi printer- We recently bought eight prints that came from the estate of a man who work as a woodblock printer for the Doi publishing company in the 1970’s. Some of the 20th century printers were known to have collected some of the woodblock prints that they were printing for their employer, in this case Doi Hanga. These eight prints were purchased from the estate of the printer by a prominent Japanese print dealer. We bought the group from that dealer and are offering all eight on Ebay tonight. The prints are very finely printed and in excellent condition. They are a nice chance to collect a more historic example of these subjects.

Signed- Koitsu with red artist’s seal
Publisher- Doi
Image size- 9 1/2” x 14 1/4” (oban)
Condition- In perfect condition with no issues to report. Nice color, excellent detail, not backed, not toned, no tears.
