This print was created by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) He was the member of the group of artists like Kawase Hasui, Takahashi Shotei ( Hiroaki ), Shiro Kasamatsu who created the prints for publishers Watanabe Shozaburo, Doi Teiichi and others. The landscape prints of Tsuchiya Koitsu are notable for their dramatic use of light and shadow. Here is “Mount Fuji from Lake Sai”, one of great prints published and printed by Doi Teiichi in 1938 and bears Doi Hangaten publishers seal and Harada/Yokoi early carver/printer seals on the left margin. Signed Koitsu and has artists seal in the image. Inscribed in Japanese at the right margin. It’s one of the best designs of the artists. Oban size 15 1/2" by 10 1/2". Great impression, color , bleedthrough and registration - very good condition. The paper slightly toned. |

These colorful prints are signed, and because I failed reading Japanese, you'll have to come to your own conclusions, so please refer to the digi-images. The mountain image is border cut left and bottom ; tear-away right and top. Both are set behind glass, with a cedar backboard. Both have a paper label afixed: "Picture & Frames maker K.Ishiwata & Co. #14 ichiome ishikawa-cho Nakaku Yokahama Japan near motomachi tram car stop". The nice frames are a simulated bamboo, and are quite unique.

Koitsu-Fuji from Lake Sai- Hangaten_Harada_Yokoi- Full27.jpg is:
This is a beautiful woodblock print by shin hanga master Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is entitled "Mt. Fuji from Lake Sai", and it dates from 1938. It is an early printing, as evidenced by the seals of the carver and printer, Harada and Yokoi. This print is in pristine condition, the nicest example of this image I have ever seen. It is still in its original presentation folder, and even the folder is in excellent condition. Crisp impression, superb color, clean white paper, a truly stellar example. Kept in original folder, never framed, never exposed to sunlight or the elements.

Excellent Tsuchiya Koitsu woodblock print of Mt. Fuji. I was told the following information about it by an expert. It dates to the 1930's due to the Harada/ Yokui mark, and the publisher is Doi Hangaten and has the Doi watermark in the upper right hand corner (like the one in the picture). It has the artist's name and red seal, as well as the title on the lower right corner. Condition is good, no folding, no tears, and original margins. At one point the print was framed and was secured on the top with masking tape that has left a .25 inch line of light tape residue along most of top edge of the print and would not be seen if framed. This print is one of three by the same artist and publisher's that I am listing. The paper measures 16 inches by 10.5 inches

KOITSU Saiko no yusho (Evening glow at Lake Sai), 1938 Fine impression and condition 26.5x39.4cm. |
I think I have Koitsu's "Fuji from Lake Sai." I believe my father got it in Japan between 1952 and 1956 (My mother has pinned it down to sometime between Jan 1956 and June 1957) . The paper (or whatever it is) seems rather yellowed with age, and there's a bit of dust, but it's been in the same frame since I can remember. It's not wrinkled or folded or anything, just old. Thanks, |
Private email from "Bud" to me. More proof that Harada/Yokoi team were working in the 1950s.:
I thought you might be interested in this print given to me by my Father. He purchased it in Tokyo in the mid-50's.
After doing some research I was able to identfy the publisher and printers. Doi Publisher and Harada and Yokio as well as the artist.
Thanks. |

Just out of a local collector's estate: ~Nice vintage original handmade Japanese woodblock print by TSUCHIYA KOITSU, titled: "Mt. Fuji from Lake Sai". Originally published by Doi in 1937, this is a later printing, most likely from the 1950s or 60s. It was found framed but the print was only taped from the back in four spots and not laid down (see pics). Very good strong color with no mat frame line and ready to be reframed.
Size: 11" wide x 16" long.
Condition: Good condition, ready to reframe and or put "as is" in a portfolio.

For auction is a recent estate find. As reported by the previous owner, this was obtained in Japan in the 1950s by her parents. The lovely scene depicts a serene Mt. Fujiama. The colors are rich and beautiful and the print has a signature on the right side. The print remains in its original frame and mat board (the mat has some age toning). The framed dimensions are 18.5" X 14".
