Koitsu, Tsuchiya- Nagoya Castle- Full10.jpg:

Saturday, 5 November 2005

I have five Japanese woodblock prints to list tonight, all from the same estate. This house was frozen in the late 50s/early 60s, and I am guessing that these are from that era as well. Let me state up front that I know nothing about Japanese woodblock prints, so I have provided pictures that show all the information on each one. This print: the upper and lower left corners appear to be glued down. Image measures about 10.25" x 15.5".

This Japanese woodblock print measures approx. 11-1/4 x 17 inches. Included is the original paper frame I found with it. Very colorful as seen! This came from a local estate. Mild toning to the borders and two mount marks at the top corners. Image is very bold. Markings on the lower left and right. No creases or tears.

The Stokes Collection
Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Nagoya Castle.” Originally published in 1937; margin is dated “Showa 12.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures 15 3/8” x 10 1/8”, plus full margins.
Japanese woodblock print titled "Nagoya Castle in Spring" by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) dated in the right margin "3rd month of Showa 12" (1937). Later edition bearing no publisher's seal. The print was purchased for 1800 yen, or $5.00, when the exchange rate was still 360 yen to the dollar. Paper measures over 17"V x 11 1/4"H (image nearly 15 1/2"V x 10 1/4"H). Excellent overall condition. One tiny pin hole in upper left margin. Monday, 5 September 2005

You are bidding on a Japanese woodblock print “The Nagoya Castle” signed by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) in March Showa 12 (1937). The print size is 17 x 11 1/4 inches. The artist’s signature and his chop stamp are at the lower right corner of the print. All four borders are intact. In the lower right border, the Japanese writing says the name of this woodblock print “The Nagoya Castle” and “Made in March Showa 12”, which is 1937. This woodblock print is not attached to backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of print. Except for some very minor diagonal wrinkling at the upper right corner, one wrinkle touching the image; some minor diagonal short wrinkles at the lower right corner of the print; and one minor diagonal wrinkle at the lower left corner; a couple of very minor wrinkles in the upper border, which do not affect the images, this woodblock print is in good condition.

Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu. Nagoya Castle. Doi Eiichi, Harada/Seki. Probably a later edition, purchased by the consignor over 20 years ago, dated 1937. 17” x 11 5/8”.

I’m holding sales about twice a month. Most of the prints I sell are large consignments from old Western collections. We get the referrals from the East coast museums (Met, MFA, Princeton, etc.). I am not selling picked-over stock secondhand – it goes direct from the consignor to you and we take 15%
Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949). Nagoya Castle. Dated 1937, published by Doi Eiichi. Harada/Seki. I can’t guarantee a date (my knowledge of shin hanga is very limited). A small printer’s stain in the bottom R corner, otherwise perfect. Color and impression are both quite good, I particularly like the green pigments. 17” X 11 1/2”. Says on reverse that it was purchased in 1984.
