Koitsu-Fuji From Tago Bay - posthumous- Full10.jpg is:
Date 1936 (early post-war printing by Yokoi, ca.1956-62, mellowed paper).
Publisher Doi Hangaten (Doi "watermark" upper left).
Carver/Printer Harada/Yokoi (Yokoi was one of Doi's earliest printers, working early 1930's to 1965.
Image Size 7.0 x 10.0.
Condition Nearly perfect. Original, unfaded colors. (Two narrow slightly thin areas extreme top/bottom verso; clean backside.
Comments Superb image. Difficult to find earlier printings in this excellent condition.
Offered is Tsuchiya Koitsu's "FUJI WITH LAKE", 1936. This print is in EXCELLENT condition (not pristine). It bears the following marks:

The Koitsu signature and seal, lower right. The "DOI HANGATEN" publisher's seal. The "DOI" 14 mm watermark in the upper left corner, top margin. The "Harada-Yokoi" carver/printer seal. (Yokoi printed for Doi until 1945). There is a 14mm watermark in the top left corner of the margin. This evidence indicates that the print is an ORIGINAL strike, not a posthumous print (those bear different/carver printer seals).

This is a beautiful print. Note the clarity of the ripples in Mt. Fuji's reflection in the lake, and that the details of the bark in the trunks of the pine trees are sharp. This indicates that the print was made early, before the woodblocks got worn from repeated use later on. Note also the sharp detail of the ripples near the lake's distant shoreline between the two trunks, and the sharpness of the ripples below the boat - more indications of an early impression off fresh-carved blocks.

There is good bleed-through on the back. There is tape residue in the bottom margin that can be removed. There is some creasing in the upper margin, high above the image. This is a beautiful print with terrific shading in the blues in the sky above Mt. Fuji, and it bears all the evidence of being an original strike, deserving of preservation-grade care by its future owners.

Margin to margin, the print is 8" x 11.5". The image is 7.13" by 10.13".

Master Koitsu is regarded by most to be on par with HASUI. His classic Shin Hanga have gained world-wide acclaim. Master Koitsu is reknowned for his mastery of dramatic use of light and shadow. Authenticated by Master Koitsui's signature, Doi Eiichi seal, watermark and the all-important double-offset Harada/Hamano seal.
