"Morning Fuji from Lake Kawaguchi"
by Tsuchiya Koitsu, 1936
oban

Koitsu-Morning Fuji from Lake Kawaguchi- Original- Full10.jpg is:

First edition landscape by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) depicting a solitary sailboat in a lake with Mt. Fuji majestically in the background. Published by Doi Teiichi the 10th month of Showa 11 (1936). The left margin contains two rectangular cartouches bearing the names of the printer Yokoi and the carver Harada, establishing the print as a pre-war edition. Doi watermark at the upper right margin corner. Large oban measuring 11 1/4"V x 16 7/8"H (image: 10 1/4"V x 15 1/2"H). Excellent condition. There are wonderful pink highlights on the left side of Mt. Fuji which are not apparent on the images. The clouds are embossed.
This print shows one of the famous subjects of the shin hanga era: Mt Fuji from Lake Yamanaka. It is a lovely image with sunlight bathing the upper slopes of Mt. Fuji. The image size is approximately 10.25"x15.5".

The prints of Koitsu published by Doi are difficult to date. The seals for the carver and printer are Harada-Yokoi, the publisher seal is Doi Hangaten and the print has a 11 mm circular watermark in the upper right hand corner. The print was originally produced in 1936. This copy is probably from the period 1956-62. The circular watermark is typically seen on what have been identified as older prints.

I obtained the print in what may (or may not) have been its original presentation folder. The only condition issue is a printers crease in the top margin which is visible in the scan.

Up for auction is this beautiful Japanese wood block print from the estate of a Korean War veteran who recalls purchasing this print while on leave in Japan in 1952. The scene depicts a lovely lake with a grand mountain, I believe it is Mt. Fuji. The print measures 10” X 15 1/2”, and the outside margin measures 11” X 16 3/4”. The print is crisp and the colors are true. There are some framing instruction notations penciled in the top and bottom margins. The back side of the print has several small pieces of brown paper tape attached to the outside margins, probably left from attachment to matting.

Morning Light on Mt. Fuji. Dated 1936 (Showa 11), published by Doi Hangaten. Printer/carver is Harada/Yokoi. I can’t guarantee a date. Pencil reverse says $7.50. No flaws. 11 1/4” X 16 3/4”. 2004/12/31
