The Stokes Collection
Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Mountain Temple.” Originally published in 1936; margin is dated “Showa 11.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures15 ˝” x 10 1/8”, plus full margins.
This beautiful Japanese woodblock print is by the famous artist Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is entitled "Mountain Temple" and was printed in 1936. Since I am no expert on woodblock prints please forgive me if I state something that is incorrect. I found another example of this print on the net on the Koitsu .com site. This is the information that was given under the print on the net. PUBLISHER: Doi Hangaten FORMAT: Chuban which is suppose to be (10" by 7") DATE: 1936. This print measures 15 1/4" by 11" so it might be Oban format and is in very good condition in color,no creases, no soiling, good bleed through on back, all great except for a tiny cut (1/4 inch) located in the ground on the left side under the crop signature.

Koitsu-Mountain Temple-1.jpg is:

Japanese woodblock print by the shin hanga artist Koitsu. Ca.1930's. Large oban design measures 11.25" x 17". Excellent color, impression, condition. Three pin-sized drying holes in left margin from printing process. Interestingly, there are no publisher seals on the print. I'm not sure if it is a Watanabe or Doi design. I do believe it is an early impression judging by the quality and very old framing from which it was rescued.
Futarasan Temple- Nikko

This print- Wonderful evening view of this temple scene in Nikko. The place instantly recognizable as Nikko by the towering trees sheltering the temple site. Beautiful, evocative print.

From the collection of a Doi printer- We recently bought eight prints that came from the estate of a man who work as a woodblock printer for the Doi publishing company in the 1970’s. Some of the 20th century printers were known to have collected some of the woodblock prints that they were printing for their employer, in this case Doi Hanga. These eight prints were purchased from the estate of the printer by a prominent Japanese print dealer. We bought the group from that dealer and are offering all eight on Ebay tonight. The prints are very finely printed and in excellent condition. They are a nice chance to collect a more historic example of these subjects.

Signed- Koitsu with red artist’s seal
Publisher- Doi
Image size- 10 1/4” x 15 1/2” (oban)
Condition- In perfect condition with no issues to report. Nice color, excellent detail, not backed, not toned, no tears.

JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT BY KOITSU
Thursday, 24 March 2005

Offered for your consideration is this very handsome vintage woodblock by Japanese artist Koitsu. Edge to edge the art measures 11" x 17 1/4". The overall condition is excellent ; there are NO tears, stains and/or repairs. It's a crisp, clean (clear) image with great color! There are 3 pin holes in the corners of the paper. The paper that the wood block has been mounted or attached to is marked: NIKKO FUTARAZAN AN ORIGINAL WOOD BLOCK PRINT BY CONTEMPORY ARTIST, KOITSU DATED; 11TH YEAR OF SHOWA ERA, 8TH MONTH (AUGUST 1936). I have provided several digital images to give you a fairly good idea as to what is being offered and the overall condition. In my opinion the images do not do this wonderful woodblock full justice.
