Today for auction we have an old / vintage japanese wood block print.I bought a few out of a house, but really don't know much about them(except whats written on them or I've found another one like it on ebay,in which case I'll quote what they wrote).Don't know who this one is by,but it is in its original frame with a Tokyo Kanada Ogawamachi sticker on the back. This has has small line of paper that looks stuck to the backing(see arrow).Frame size is 20" x 14" inches 20/12/2004

This is a superb original woodblock print by noted shin hanga printmaker Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is a very early printing, as evidenced by the carver/printer seals of Ikeda and Ito in the lower lefthand margin. The paper is watermarked with the circular Doi publisher's seal in the upper righthand margin. The print is in reasonably good condition; there is some light toning and a couple of foxing spots, which I have tried to show in the pictures. That said, it is a beautiful impression and it has excellent colors, and overall presents very well. It is quite rare to find such an early edition Koitsu print. It is large oban size, about 10 1/4 x 15 1/4 plus margins.

TSUCHIYA KOITSU WOODBLOCK PRINT 1936 - MIYAJIMA SHRINE

TSUCHIYA KOITSU, 1870-1949, was a talented artist from an early age. He went to Tokyo and started woodblock printing when only 15 years old. At the turn of the century he became a lithographer but returned to woodblocks in the early 30’s. In many respects, Koitsu is “a poor man’s Hasui”, having a similar approach to landscape prints. This woodblock print depicts the Torii gate and a corridor of the famous Miyajima Shrine. It is an excellent example of his talent of the use of light and dark to produce a dramatic effect, which is a characteristic of most of his prints. Dated 1936 but printed in the 1950's. The condition of the print is excellent. I have removed the print from its original paper folder (which is available to the buyer if wanted). Strong bleedthrough. Published by Doi Hangaten, printer Yokoi, carver Harada. Image size 15¼“ x 10¼“, paper size 17¼“ x 11¼“. The last photo, in black and white, shows Hasui’s 1949 version of this temple.

Summer Moon at Miyajima, 1936, Publisher: Doi Sadaichi, 10.5" x 15.5", Very good condition.
Offered for auction is a romantic Japanese woodblock (I believe) print showing the moon casting its light over the water, a man poling his skiff, and Japanese lanterns providing a golden glow under the Asian sloped roofs. This picture would make an excellent complement to an arts and crafts décor.

Measuring 11 1/4" tall and 17" wide, the print is in excellent condition with no stains, tears, or discoloration. Unfortunately, it has been glued to a cardboard backing.

As shown above, the lower left-hand side of the print shows Japanese characters and a red chop mark. The right-hand side also shows characters and the penciled numbers #7244 and #2 appear along the bottom margin.

Comments Beautiful moonlite Miyajima Shrine image.
Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Summer Moon in Miyajima.” Originally published in 1936; margin is dated “Showa 11.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures 15¼” 10”, plus full margins.
