This is a beautiful woodblock print by shin hanga master Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is entitled "Twilight at Ushigome", and it dates from 1936. It is an early printing, as evidenced by the seals of the carver and printer, Harada and Yokoi. This print is in pristine condition, the nicest example of this image I have ever seen. It is still in its original presentation folder, and even the folder is in excellent condition. Crisp impression, superb color, clean white paper, a truly stellar example. Kept in original folder, never framed, never exposed to sunlight or the elements.

The bleeding of the ink through the paper is apparent. The print is in good condition and has no rips or tears. It also comes from a smoke free home.

Fabulous Japanese oban woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949.) Evening at Ushigome, published by Doi Hangaten. Street scene on a rainy evening. Strong colors and sharp printing. Artist signature and red seal at lower right. Paper is watermarked at top left corner. Very good condition. Unframed, full margins. 17 x 11 1/4 inches.

This is a beautiful original woodblock print by noted shin hanga printmaker Tsuchiya Koitsu. It measures about 15 1/4 x 10 1/4 plus margins. It is very unusual in that the Doi seals usually seen in the lower lefthand margin are missing and replaced by a seal I have seen on only one other Koitsu print (which I also have currently). Judging by the crispness of the impression and the presence of the small Doi watermark upper left, I would say that this is an early printing, but as I say, it bears a most unusual seal. Excellent color and impression, full margins, appears never to have been framed. A true curiosity for the avid collector! |

Koitsu, Tsuchiya- Evening at Ushigome- Full16.jpg:
Monday, 25 July 2005
A beautiful print from a 1930's woodblock by Koitsu Tsuchiya. The English title is Evening at Ushigome. This print carries the Doi seal that means "true" in the lower right hand corner of the print. The size is 28 X 41 cm or 11 X 17. Written in pencil at the lower margin of the print is 32 X 46 and I assume that was a size for the mat. The mat will be included with the print.
There is not a publisher or carver seal on the left margin and this usually means that it is a 1950's print from the original woodblock by a publisher loosely affiliated with Doi. However, Doi sometimes allowed his printers to print their own copies of these prints so your guess is as good as mine. Further, the printer and carver seals are not part of the original woodblock. They are put on after the print is completed. During the Second World War, there were prints made without the seals. There is Japanese writing along the margin of the right side of the print and is most likely the title of the piece.
Note the picture of the reverse side of the print and you can see the colors bleeding through.
The condition is excellent with vivid colors and is on Japanese paper. It comes with a paper mat. There are two tiny splits in the paper about 1/8 inch in size.

Koitsu-Evening at Ushigome- No seals- 1- Full27.jpg is:
One Japanese woodblock print from Koitsu, a famous shin hanga artist. This one is still its folder, tip mounted in 2 corners. 11.25"x 17.25" full size. No publisher seal so it could be a later edition not first. Color still in very good condition. Great impression.
|
The artist is Tsuchiya Koitsu as signed. Paper is about 15 3/4" by 10 3/4". Great color and bleedthrough. Print's margins have residue that does not intrude into image (except top right edge about 1/8" into image in a couple of spots along an 1 1/2" long waxy remnant that should easily remove if you exercise caution and care). Be certain to click BIG PHOTO above to see HUGE DETAIL photo of print. Also, on all four (4) corners there are diagonal cuts into the print. Three (3) of these cuts intrude into image a maximum of 3/8".

Tsuchiya Koitsu (Japanese 1870-1949) … "Oban" 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (approx.) color woodblock print … Signed with artist's signature and seal lower right … Titled/Dated lower right margin "Evening at Ushigome, 1936" …Publisher: Doi Hangaten…(Note: This is a later printing with NO publisher's seal. Probably 1970s/80s) … Deckled edges Top and Left … Condition: Excellent. No rips, tears, scratches. No toning or fading. Some old tape marks on reverse top. A very clean and exteamly bright and colorful impression … Koitsu was noted for his dramatic use of light and shadow in his print work. Although this is a later edition of this image, it is quite beautiful no-the-less in GREAT condition.

This print was purchased by my parents in Japan between 1957 and 1962. It has never been framed and is still in the original box with several others purchased at the same time. These prints are mounted in folders which serve as "matte"s for the print.
This print has such vivid colors it takes your breath away. The print is approximately 10 x 15. It is in superb condition.

Koitsu Tsuchiya Woodblock print "Jinrakuzaka at Ushigome" Showa 14 (1939) posthumous edition
Print is in excellent condition, excellent color and impression, full margins.
Size: approx. 16.75 x 11.5 inches
|
Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Jinrakuzaka at Ushigome.” Originally published in 1939; margin is dated “Showa 14.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures 15 3/8” x 10 1/8”, plus full margins.

Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu. Evening at Ushigome. Doi Eiichi, Harada/Seki. Probably a later edition, purchased by the consignor over 20 years ago, dated 1936. 17” x 11 1/8”.
I’m holding sales about twice a month. Most of the prints I sell are large consignments from old Western collections. We get the referrals from the East coast museums (Met, MFA, Princeton, etc.). I am not selling picked-over stock secondhand – it goes direct from the consignor to you and we take 15%.
