This is a wonderful Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu measuring approximately 11 3/8” by 16 7/8”. I believe this print is titled Ueno Park and as can be seen a temple rises behind a beautiful grove of trees all reflected in a large pond or lake; a woman in a beautiful kimono looks out on the scene. The print is in very good condition with no tears or holes and with good color and bleed through.

Koitsu-Geisha and Cherry Tree- Eiichi_Harada_Seki- Full14.jpg is:

"Ueno Park" - 1939

Full Oban

Image size 17.5" x 11.5"
Condition Pristine. Never laid down. Strong bleedthrough to verso. No folds, no tears, no creases, no foxing. Scan shows slight discoloration in margins. This does not appear in actual print.

Master Koitsu is regarded by most to be on par with HASUI. His classic Shin Hanga have gained world-wide acclaim. Master Koitsu is reknowned for his mastery of dramatic use of light and shadow. This lovely print is awe-inspiring. Struck from the original blocks, is actually a bit larger than standard Oban size. Authenticated by Master Koitsu's signature, Doi Teiichi seal, watermark and the all-important double-offset Harada/Seki seal. Most prints seen in recent times carry the Hamano printer's seal, signifying a more recent print. This print carries the earlier Seki seal. Seki worked for Doi for 4 decades prior to 1993. We would estimate this print was struck circa 1980 or earlier, making it more rare than some current later-editions.

Master Koitsu's use of colour and shading in this stunning print is remarkable. The image is incredibly bold, yet wonderfully delicate. The superb contrast of cherry blossoms in full bloom and the lovely rich deep blues of the lake are a compliment to the woman's wonderful multi- colored kimono. The sophisticated printing technique of Bokashi (gradation of colour), and gofun, which gives the print an embossed feel and depth of image, is used extensively throughout the print.
