This is a beautiful woodblock print by shin hanga master Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is entitled "Teahouse", and it dates from 1935. It is an early printing, as evidenced by the seals of the carver and printer, Harada and Yokoi. This print is in pristine condition, the nicest example of this image I have ever seen. It is still in its original presentation folder, and even the folder is in excellent condition. Crisp impression, superb color, clean white paper, a truly stellar example. Kept in original folder, never framed, never exposed to sunlight or the elements. You will likely never find another as nice!

The print size is 15 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. The artist’s signature and his chop stamp are at the lower left corner of the print. Four borders are intact. In the lower right border, is written the title of this woodblock print and January Showa 10, which is 1935. In the lower right part of the bottom border, there is writing 9 ¼ x 14 1/8, which I guess is the writing from the framer before.

This print- Incredible shin-hanga work and one of Koitsu’s masterworks. The classic geisha house illuminated at nighttime. Two girls seen passing at the doorway, the silhouette of another in the window above. Wonderful, moody print and stunning design.

From the collection of a Doi printer- We recently bought eight prints that came from the estate of a man who work as a woodblock printer for the Doi publishing company in the 1970’s. Some of the 20th century printers were known to have collected some of the woodblock prints that they were printing for their employer, in this case Doi Hanga. These eight prints were purchased from the estate of the printer by a prominent Japanese print dealer. We bought the group from that dealer and are offering all eight on Ebay tonight. The prints are very finely printed and in excellent condition. They are a nice chance to collect a more historic example of these subjects.

Signed- Koitsu with red artist’s seal
Publisher- Doi
Image size- 9 1/2” x 14 1/4” (oban)
Condition- In perfect condition with no issues to report. Nice color, excellent detail, not backed, not toned, no tears.

You are bidding on a Japanese woodblock print signed by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949). The print size is 15 x 10 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. The artist’s signature and his chop stamp are at the lower left corner of the print. Four borders are intact. In the lower right border, is written the title of this woodblock print and January Showa 10, which is 1935. This woodblock print is attached to an original Japanese Washi backing paper only at the very small tip of the upper right corner so that strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of original Japanese Washi paper. Except for a 2 mm foxing band at the outer upper border edge due to the print’s age, which does not affect the images at all, this woodblock print is in excellent condition.
