HI
I was wondering if you could confirm that these two prints are original 1934
and 1940 woodblock prints of Koitsu (NEZU SHRINE & TEA SHOP)… I acquired
these from my father who was stationed in Japan in the 1950s (I was born at
Tachikawa AFB in 56) …
I will send as two email since these are large scans … I scanned the
images in two parts each … let me know if you want another detail scan of
a particular area

"Snow at Nezu Shrine"
Tsuchiya Koitsu
This is the second, and last, print I have up for auction (I also aquired this by inheritance with the other one). Made in December 1934 by Koitsu, it exemplifies his style of using light and shadow for dramatic affect.

Print quality is superb. It has no scratches, brown spots, tears. It does have some ink smears on the margins. The size of the print is 14.25 x 9.5 not including the margins. It is still attached to the original folder and the folder has some tape marks on it, see photo below, but no tears. The colors are vivid and the lines are smooth and even.

The seal combination on this print is relatively rare: Doi Hangaten (publisher), Harada (carver), and Itou (printer). A more desirable pre-war print by Koitsu.
A GORGEOUS WOODBLOCK PRINT BY KOITSU TSUCHIYA ( 1870 - 1949 )!!! A lovely scene of ladies walking at night in the snow. VERY DEEP. DARK RICH COLOR. One side is connected to the back paper, with this exception , excellent condition. Measures 14 1/4 inches by 9 1/2 inches. A WONDERFUL WOODBLOCK PRINT BY ONE OF JAPAN'S GREATEST ARTISTS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!!!!!!

The Nezu Shrine is said to have been extablished by the legendary priest "Yamato Takeru no Mikoto". In 1705, the 5th Shogun built the structures that can be seen today. The 6th Shogun, Ienobu, subsequently offered three "mikoshi" (portable shrines) to the shrine and created the "Tenka Matsuri" (reign fesival). The festival s stll held on the 21st of September. Because it is one of the oldest original constructon remaining in Tokyo, the main hall, twogates and the wall of Nezu Jinja has been designated as cultral landmarks. The Main hall was designed in red lacquer called "Gongenzukuri". The Gate is clearly influenced by the Buddhist style. The shrine's grounds are known for its plum-blossoms in February and especially for its azaleas and wisteria gardens which bloom from late April into May. But here in Koitsu's print it is shown on a snowy winter night.
