Nice nightime woodblock print by the artist Tsuchiya Koitsu. I was given some information about it by a local expert. It dates to the 1930's, the publisher is Doi Hangaten and has the Doi water mark in the upper corner like the one in the picture, and has the Harada/ Yokui stamp on the lower left side. Artist signature and red seal is on the print in the lower left corner. In good condition with no holes or folds, and has the original margins. At one time it was framed and has about .25 inch of masking tape residue along the bottom edge only. This line will not appear when the print is framed. The paper measurements are 16 by 10.5 inches.

Please take a look at my original Tsuchiya Koitsu woodblock print. It is sealed and and signed in the lower left side. It has no rips or tears. Nice early clean print that has two paper remnants on the verso from the mount. About 7cms in from the top corners. If you would like a pic I'll send as I don't think I took a close up of them. Hand made paper with no thins. No watermark is visable. The image measurements are 36.4cm x 26.1cm while the sheet is 39.0cm x 26.1cm. |
This print has the early (1950’s) Doi seals in the lower left corner margin that read: Doi Hanga-Ten (Published by Hanga-Ten), Hanken Shoyu (Copyright Shoyu). Below the Doi seals are the “offset” carver and printer seals, which read: Hori Harada (Carved by Harada) and Suri Yokoi (Printed by Yokoi, one of the earliest printers who worked for Doi). The back of the print shows the excellent saturation of ink that occurs with woodblock prints. Only about 200 of these were originally created. This print is clean and free of tears, holes or stains; but it is wrinkled, the worst of which is shown in the detail with the figures. |

You are bidding on an original Japanese woodblock print “Temple Rain” signed by the famous Taisho Shin Hanga woodblock print master Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) with Doi Publisher Seal made in May Showa 8 (1933). This is an original Japanese woodblock print signed by Koitsu. The print size is 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. The artist’s signature and his chop stamp are at the lower left corner of the print. All four borders are intact. In the lower right border, the Japanese Kanji writing says the name of this woodblock print and “Made in May Showa 8”, which is 1933. In the lower left border, there are the original Doi Publisher’s seal, carver and printer’s seals. This woodblock print is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of print. Except for a 5 mm wide tape residue along the edge of the bottom border, which does not affect the image at all, this woodblock print is in excellent condition.
