TITLE: Zozoji temple in the snow

Image Size: Oban,

Publisher: Doi Teeichi
Carver: Harada

Condition: good condition
Offered for sale is a wonderful, first edition Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949), titled Zozoji Temple in Snow, 1933. The seals in the left margin indicate that the print was published by Doi Hangaten, carved by Harada and printed by Yokoi. Since Yokoi worked for Doi until approximately 1945, this print was clearly made during Koitsu's lifetime

This print is has wonderfully fresh colors and is in very good condition, aside from some pinholes in the top margin. The image measures approximately 14 1/4 by 9 3/8 inches, plus margins.

This is a superb original woodblock print by noted shin hanga printmaker Tsuchiya Koitsu. It is titled "Zozoji Temple in Snow". It is oban size, about 14 1/4 x 9 1/4 plus margins. It is in reasonably good condition, with light toning (more evident on the back of the print than on the front). The print bears the early seals of Harada and Yokoi in the margin lower left. The Doi publisher's watermark is in the margin upper left; you can see it if you hold the print up to a light.

Zozoji Temple in Snow, 1933
15 1/2 by 10 1/4 inches
This Japanese woodblock print measures approx. 11-1/4 x 17 inches. Very attractive snow scene. Included is the original paper frame I found with it. This came from a local estate. Mounted to the paper frame at the corners and ready for framing. Image is very bold. Markings on the lower left and right. No creases or tears but marks at the corners from mounting.

Gorgeous woodblock print, this piece has been stowed away for the last sixty plus years and never framed or enjoyed otherwise. The print measures just over 15" tall x just over 10" wide (oban). The print features a winter scene with a rich red pagoda style building, stars in the night sky, snow on the trees and two Japanese women walking in the foreground. The colors are so rich and vibrant: red, green, blues, purple, pink and white. The print is signed on the lower right corner with what I believe is the artist Koitsu's signature, there is a red seal mark beneath the signature. There are additional signatures on the lower left of the print, outside the print itelf on the paper, and on the lower right on the paper. The print is in very good condition with no damage to report.
This is one of three original Japanese woodblock prints that I currently have up for bid. This one is titled "Snow at Zojo Temple" and was created by Koitsu Tsuchiya. It measures 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches and was originally published in 1933. It is in very good condition. It has been adhered to another piece of paper at the two left corners. There is also a faint matte board burn about 1/2 inch into the image area.

One large Oban size Japanese woodblock print from Koitsu, a famous shin hanga artist. Print depicts snow scene of a temple. Artist seal and signature are on lower right. No publisher seal so may be a later edition. 10.5" x 15.5". Tip mounted on paper on left side. Excellent condition. No mat burn, no fox. Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled “Snow at Zojo Temple.” Originally published in 1933; margin is dated “Showa 8.” Later Hama impression posthumously printed from Koitsu’s original blocks. These later editions are identical to the earlier editions except for the publisher’s seal. With their intense realism, Koitsu’s woodblock prints have immortalized his country’s scenic beauty. Subtle effects of light and shadow endow his scenic renderings with an aura of captivating beauty, making his prints highly prized among collectors. The workmanship in both carving and printing is very good. Skillfully executed changes of color shading ("bokashi") are seen throughout the print. Pristine condition, with excellent color and registration, and strong ink bleed through. Oban size image measures14 ¼” 9 ¼”, plus full margins.

Zojoji was founded in 1393 and moved to its present site in 1598 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. It became the family temple of the Tokugawa family and an administrative center governing the religious studies and activities of the Jodo sect. In its heyday, Zojoji extended oer an area of 826,000 square meters, and had 3,000 priests and students of Buddhism dispersed over 48 minor temples and 150 schools on its grounds.
