Shin Hanga: 2 x Key Block Proofs

Artist: Koitsu
Format: 2 x Oban tate-e: each sheet: 16.25" x 12"

Subject: Two key block proofs, on the left 'Great Lantern at Asakusa Temple', published in 1934, signed Koitsu, on the right 'Kameido Drum Bridge' published in 1933.

Date: c. 1933/4

Condition: Full size. Some soils. Minor foxing, marks and flaws. Generally very good state.

Colour: N/A

Impression: Fine impressions.
Size: ~15 7/8"h. x 10 5/8"w., sight/mat opening; frame size ~22"h x 17"w. Found in the attic eaves of a grand old home that very recently succumbed to the wrecking ball (more urban sprawl!) here in Northern Ohio. This OLD JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT is large, possibly 'oban' size, and features a beautiful rain scene with a traditional arched bridge and pagoda style building. Colors are vivid and image has crisp detail. The sodden sky is shades of deep teal to lighter blue-grey. A kimono clad lady stands in the entry way of the building with a light red umbrella. ( We have no idea of the exact age or artist, but are 'guesstimating' around World War II era.)

Being sold as-found and intact in frame with original backing paper, we are assuming that this woodblock print is pasted to paper board as another print we have with the same style frame & from the same estate.

This auction is for a wonderful woodblock that depicts a night or overcast scene with a bridge, trees, water, pagoda, etc. It is also raining. It measures 11" by 16 1/2". There are markings on the left and right borders. There is also a red mark to the lower right corner of the woodblock. Condition is fantastic. BEAUTIFUL WOODBLOCK!! For some reason the colors are a little washed out in the photos-the colors are actually nice and deep.
