Saturday, 5 November 2005 This is an original oban size(15 x 10 inches) Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu(1870-1949), published by Kawaguchi & Sakai, of unknown date. Kawaguchi and Sakai published very few of Koitsu's work. The work has decently full margins and carries the third seal for Kawaguchi and Sakai, both on the left in long form,and on the lower right, in shorter form. The name of the print is above the short form on the right. Koitsu, in red seal, is in the lower right body of the print. Koitsu was the long term pupil of Kiyochika, and lived with the latter for almost 20 years. There is mild fading of the print, I think, or it just may be that this is a night time scene. Someone, probably when it was framed, mistakenly ascribed this print to Hasui, whose name is written in pencil at the bottom lower right. "Original woodblock Print" is written at the bottom lower left and "Misty Morning" bottom middle. This is a fine and clean print by an excellent and well-regarded artist. |
