From Tosh:
OK. The seals read as follows:
(1)Publisher name in upper rectangle: Hanken Shoyuu (Copy Right) "????" IIDA KUNITAROU ”?????”
(2)Lower right side as Seisaku Shunin ”????”(production chief): HIRA I ”??”
(3)Lower left side as Suri ”?” (carver):SAKA KURA ”??”
HIRAI (as Hirai Koichi ”?? ??(?)”) was active during pre-war and SAKAURA (as Sakakura Seijirou ”?? ???”) was active as skillful printer both at pre-war and post-war period, who died in 1962 at his age 81. Please refer to the enlosed his photo and article at Ukiyoe Geijutu No2 in 1963. As far as I remember, I saw the above-mentioned publisher seal with carver/printer names only a few times.
I saw those seals for the first time was maybe in early 2000 on Koitsu's "Nijo Castle" at Hotei web site but I could just recognize its Iida Kunitarou publisher name but caarver/printer names in vain at that time.
Then those seals appeared on a print titled "Twighlight (Hamarikyu) ”??? ?(???)”by an unfamiliar artist SHISUI ”??” dated 1937/July (?? ??????), which black/white image was depicted at #824 of Mita Art Gallery catalog No.2 issued in 2000/May and which was also for sale at #78 of JPAA(Japan Prints) Auction on Dec.8/2001. I checked it by myself and confirmed the publisher name with carver/printer names. Please refer to the enclosed image at Mita Art and listing information at JPAA with my handwritten notes.
It is still hard for me to conclude at this stage with few examples whether or not Iida Kunitarou was pre-war publisher. But I have recently noticed that Doi Sadaichi stopped Koitsu's fresh prints publication for half year between 1937/July and 1937/Dec. Coincidently I found Doi Sadaichi stopped to put his regular advertisement page on and after 1937/Aug at monthly Uliyo-e journal "Ukiyoekai ”????” . I wonder if Doi Sadaichi was either in his poor health condition or in some difficulty with his business during those six months. So I dare to speculate that Iida Kunitarou emporarily printed Koitsu's several prints in favor of Doi Sadaichi. So you might go for this print as pre-war. You can count on me. I will try to search for other samples and proofs for Iida Kunitarou publisher at pre-war period.
Best regards,
