Kawase Hasui (1883–1957)
The complete set of Eight Views of Korea (Chosen hakkei)

Eight woodblock prints, each signed and sealed Hasui, and published for Kansai Bijutsusha by Watanabe Shozaburo, 1939
The designs comprising:
1. Chongsokjong, Kyongju (Keishu Sosekitei), October 1939
2. Samburam rock, Kumgang Mountain (Kongosan Sansengan), August 1939
3. Pulguk Temple, Kyongju (Keishu Bukkokuji), September 1939
4. Hwasa Gate, Suwon (Mizuhara Kakomon), August 1939
5. Spring at Pubyong Pavilion, Modan Viewpoint, Pyongyang (Heijo no haru (Botandai Fusekiro)), 1939
6. Nakhwa, Puyo (Fuyo Rakkagan), September 1939
7. Sanggye Pavilion, Paekyang Temple (Hakuyoji Sokeiro), November 1939
8. Kyonghwe Pavilion, Kyongsong (Chosen hakkei, Kyojo Keikaro), November 1939
Each approx. 42.5 x 29.2 cm.

Series Information: 
These prints resulted from a trip Hasui made to Korea in 1939, together with the artists Ikegami Shuho (1874-1944), Yazawa Genetsu (1886-1952), Nagata Shunsui (1889-1970) and Yamakawa Shuho (1898-1944). The prints were published by Kansai Bijutsusha [関西 美術社] in Osaka headed by Naito Seifu, but produced by Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962). The series title does not appear on the prints.
Artist Bio: 

川瀬 巴水。1883年(明治16年)5月18日 - 1957年(昭和32年)11月7 日)。大正・昭和期の浮世絵師、版画家。1918年 (大正7年)、風景画家として世に出る。以後、数多くの木版画を発表。 衰退した日本の浮世絵版画を復興すべく吉田博らとともに新しい浮世絵版画の叙情的世界に、自然に肉薄する近代人の視点を導入することにより、独自の世界を展開した。享年74歳。
