The following information was taken from the original web listing of this artwork. Note that there may be some inaccuracies:
You are bidding on a RARE 1932 Original Japanese Woodblock Print, "Snow at Godaido, Matsushima" by Kawase Hasui. Full Margins: 15 -1/4" x 10 -1/4". Have not seen this design on eBay and it was never reproduced in editions showing the common heisei seal! It displays superb colors on very early 1940's-50's era S. Watanabe paper - this is nearly identical to a first state; just without the Watanabe margin seal - it has every other attribute. Comes in the original commercial wrapping paper when purchased from the Minato Gallery in Motomachi, Yokohama. This is how it was found, unframed and in the original wrapping paper since purchased!
As described by Narazaki: 'The simple compositional forms in this piece are only natural given that this is a snowscape. But it differs from Hasui's work to date. The three-dimensional arrangement of the rock and the soft, curvilinear lines of the temple building, pine tree and ripples on the water add to the design-oriented sense of this print. Perhaps it was Hasui's about-face to the limits of realism, but it can be seen as a new attempt in the search for a fluent style.' - Hotei Vol. 1
