KASETSU or KOSETSU - Japanese Watercolor Painting
River Rapids Crossing / 1920s
There is a little confusion over the actual spelling of this artist's name. I side with the first spelling. Though his signature is hard to read, his impressionistic style is always recognizable. Loads of colorful scenery along with a realistic water setting in rural Japan. The painting is well done in a 'Western' painting style that started in the late 1880s when Japan opened its' doors to the West and its' teachers. The popularity of this style grew into the 'shin hanga' woodblock print movement at the beginning of the 20th century. The colors are STRONG. There is a good perspective throughout the painting. The condition is FINE.
NOTED: A few soft wrinkles are visible on the verso, but NOT noticed from the face. The paper size is: 13 1/4 x 20 inches or 33.7 x 50.8 cm painted on heavy watercolor paper. |
