Harbor Sunrise / 1920s
S or T TOSUKE are one in the same. His painting style is always recognizable. In this harbor scene, TOSUKE paints the daily life of fishermen. The painting is well done in a 'Western' painting style that started in the late 1880s when Japan opened its' doors to the West and its' teachers. The popularity of this style grew into the 'shin hanga' woodblock print movement at the beginning of the 20th century. The colors are STRONG. This painting uses 'bokashi' shading in the sky and water area. There is a good perspective throughout the painting. The condition is FINE.
NOTED: The painting is laid. The paper size is: 12 3/4 x 19 1/2 inches or 32.4 x 49.5 cm painted on heavy watercolor paper. |
