A Rare Japanese Shin-hanga Woodblock Print by Ito Sozan. Unrecorded? Published Pre-Earthquake (1923)

15 x 6 3/4 ins. (38.2 x 17.3 cms) Sozan (1884-?) worked for the great Shin-hanga publishers Watanabe up until about 1926. He was far less prolific than his rival Koson but in no way inferior. The present superb design of ducks in snow comes from a previously unseen group of Watanabe prints bought by a British traveller in Japan before the Kanto Earthquake of 1923. We have been unable to find another example of this design on the internet. The reverse has a Watanabe inventory number on the lower corner, No. 330. The print is sealed Sozan and there is very subtle blind printing (embossing or gauffrage) on the white body and wings of the right hand duck.

The condition is almost pristine. There are 5 very minor paste marks at the top edge of the reverse as Watanabe prints were usually sold tipped onto a backing sheet of plain paper.
