A Group of Five Japanese Watercolours by H Fukaya and S Ishida. Ca. 1919
Large paintings 13 1/4 x 10 ins. (33.8 x 25.4) Smaller paintings 13 1/2 x 5 ins. (34.3 x 12.7 cms) A number of watercolours by H Fukaya and S Ishida can be found on the internet but nothing is known of the artists. One of the group by H Fukaya is dated 1919 which, as none of the others we found were dated, provides a rough idea of dating for this artist. These items were part of a group of prints, photographs and watercolours which had been collected in Japan pre. Kanto Earthquake (1923) apparently by an English traveller of whom we have no further information. Each of the paintings have two katakana characters on the reverse, the significance of which we do not know.
The condition is uniformly excellent with no damage and no repairs or fading. Judging by the condition of the collection they do not seem to have seen the light of day since they were originally purchased. |
