A guaranteed genuine original Japanese woodblock print showing April - Roshun Sakura (Hazy Spring, Cherry Blossoms). Series - Kacho Shikishi Juni Gatsu - Bird and Flower Shikishi for the 12 Months. The artist is Yamaguchi Hoshun (1893 - 1971). Printed c.1950. Excellent color.

山口 蓬春（やまぐち ほうしゅん）
明治26年<1893>－昭和46年<1971> 北海道出身
日本画家。本名は三郎。
高輪中学在学中、白馬会研究所で洋画を学び、1914年東京美術学校西洋学科に入学（1918年日本画科に転科）。
1923年、東京美術学校日本画科を主席で卒業し、翌年松岡映丘主催の新興大和絵会に参加。
そして1926年、大和絵の伝統が息づいた「三熊野の那智の御山」で帝展特選及び帝国美術院賞を受賞、宮内省買上げとなり、一躍脚光を浴びました（翌年も帝展で「緑庭」が特選を受賞）。
1929年の帝国美術学校創立に際して、平福百穂、小茂田青樹らと共に教授就任。翌年には福田平八郎、中村岳陵、木村荘八、牧野虎雄らと六潮会を結成。
流派を超えた交流の中から独自の絵画領域を広げて行った結果、1935年の創立に参加した国画院を脱退し、映丘と袂を分かつ形で、新しい日本画の創造を目指しました。
戦後は、新日本画への姿勢がより一層明確に打ち出され、フランス近代絵画の解釈を取り入れた知的でモダンなスタイルを確立し、日本画のモダニズム化に大きな功績を残しました。
日展の指導的立場として、日展運営会理事、日展常務理事、日展顧問を歴任し、1965年に文化勲章受章、文化功労者。 |
