Ross: I am not convinced that this artist is Goto Sumio. Sumio's style is quite different, and these watercolours appear to be much older than 1950's+. Based on some frames I've seen I'd say 1920s.

1930 Born in a Shingon Temple in Chiba Prefecture. 1952 Awarded a prize at the 37th Japan Art Institute Exhibition, the first time for him to receive this prize. 1974 Nominated for membership in the Japan Art Institute. 1976 Awarded the Education Minister’s Prize at the 61st Japan Art Institute Exhibition. 1986 Becomes professor emeritus at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. Awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize at the 71st Japan Art Institute Exhibition. 1988 Becomes a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Donates a fusuma door painting to the Koyasan Tokyo Branch Temple. 1993 Donates a fusuma door painting to Hase-dera Temple in Nara. 1995 Holds a one-man exhibition in Paris, France. 1999 Donates a fusuma door painting to Takahatafudoson Kongoji Temple in Tokyo. 2000 Becomes a trustee of the Japan Art Institute. 2006 Receives the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.”
