A Japanese Shin Hanga Woodblock Print by Yamamoto Shoun 1870-1965
13 5/8 x 7 3/8 ins. (34.6 x 18.8 cms) Shoun was mainly celebrated for his bijin prints but he did a few natural history subjects of which this is the finest example. It was published by the Tokyo firm Daikokuya (Matsuki Heikichi) who ceased operations in 1923, the year of the Great Kanto Earthquake when many businesses were totally destroyed. The present example dates from around 1910. The design of crows in snow bears comparison with Koson at his best. Note the faint red of the tongue of the lower crow and the fine rendering of the snow laden pines at the lower right.
The condition is very good with no damage and no repairs. There is very slight toning of the reverse and some very minor rust marks on the left hand edge. |

Used the psudonym Shokoku (松谷) in his early career.
