Description "Kamakura Daibutsu" (The Great Buddha, Kamakura). This design has another color version which was created later. The bronze statue of Amida Buddha, also popularly known as "The Great Buddha of Kamakura". It is located near the Kotoku Temple in Kamakura. With a height of 13.35 meters, it is the second highest Buddha statue in Japan. The temple compound which housed the Buddha was swept away by the great tsunami in 1495. But the venerable Buddha remained here to oversee a million people every year.
Note Publisher Watanabe's seal during 1927-32 stamped on the right margin. Watanabe's old seal indicating its Ginza address is pasted on the backside.

Up for auction is a Beautiful Antique Woodblock of Buddha. The woodblock belonged to a Japanese Lady that brought a few of these over from Japan during the war. This is an original, the colors are wonderful, the shadowing is fabulous. The piece measures 10 1/4 by 15 1/2, there are a couple of worm holes as shown. |

川瀬 巴水。1883年（明治16年）5月18日 - 1957年（昭和32年）11月7 日）。大正・昭和期の浮世絵師、版画家。1918年 （大正7年）、風景画家として世に出る。以後、数多くの木版画を発表。 衰退した日本の浮世絵版画を復興すべく吉田博らとともに新しい浮世絵版画の叙情的世界に、自然に肉薄する近代人の視点を導入することにより、独自の世界を展開した。享年74歳。 |
