Vintage bijin-ga ukiyoe; Japanese woodblock print of an attractive woman wearing a kimono of many colors; signed lower-left (by an artist with whom I am unfamiliar); showing light gaufrage embossing, vibrant color, good register, and some bleed-through to verso; in good condition, with even toning to paper, a repair to the upper-left corner and mounting residue top-center verso; stamped "#703" verso, along with "Made in Japan". Print would display beautifully matted and framed.

岩田専太郎 いわた-せんたろう
1901－1974 大正-昭和時代の挿絵画家。
明治34年6月8日生まれ。伊東深水にまなび、20歳のとき博文館の「講談雑誌」に挿絵をかく。
大正15年から「大阪毎日新聞」連載の吉川英治「鳴門秘帖(なるとひちょう)」の挿絵が評判をよび、
モダン浮世絵とよばれる美人画はその後幅ひろい支持をえた。
挿絵はほかに大仏(おさらぎ)次郎「赤穂(あこう)浪士」、川口松太郎「蛇姫様」などがある。
昭和49年2月19日死去。72歳。東京出身。
画集に「三百年のおんな」、随筆に「女・おんな・女」「わが半生記」など。 |
