Note:
Kawase Hasui travelled for Korea during June 1 through July 4, 1939 together with Yamakawa Shuhou (山川秀峰)by Korean Railway Bureau's invitation. Just after his travel, Hasui started to make his woodblock prints of "Korean Eight Views Series" under the copy right of Osaka Kansai Bijutsusha (大阪関西美術社)which founder was Naitou Seifuu(内藤清風), Actually speaking, those woodblock prints were carved and printed by Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop. And al woodblocks and those copy rights were transferred to Watanabe Shozaburo on April 15, 1940 for 440 yen. In May 1940, they held an exhibition of Hasui prints in Seoul where Hasui himself attended.
As far as I remember, several prints of Korean Views series held both Watanabe Shozaburo's publisher seal and Osaka Kansai Bijutsusha 's publisher seal, which suggested that unsold prints were transferred to Watanabe. From my personal standpoints, those prints quality seemed to be normal and less attractive.
Regards,
Tosh

| Series Information: |
These prints resulted from a trip Hasui made to Korea in 1939, together with the artists Ikegami Shuho (1874-1944), Yazawa Genetsu (1886-1952), Nagata Shunsui (1889-1970) and Yamakawa Shuho (1898-1944). The prints were published by Kansai Bijutsusha [関西 美術社] in Osaka headed by Naito Seifu, but produced by Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962). The series title does not appear on the prints. |
