WATERCOLOUR LANDSCAPE FOREST INTERIOR SIGNED MATSUDA c1940s
Charming superb quality watercolour study of a forest interior, a cabin or woodsman’s cottage beyond. Signed bottom right Matsuda but without a traditional ink impression we would expect from Japanese artists. Our research draws us to Fumiko Matsuda and our paperwork for this painting also indicates the artist, purchased from a leading country market auction. Few Matsuda works come to auction and the artist’s work has matured in recently years. This example, a very atmospheric piece with mist cloaking the forest beyond contrasting with the trees and foliage in the foreground, is an early work for Matsuda, c1940s. A simple, well balanced landscape, given much depth and atmosphere with a subtle use of soft colours to create depth. On art paper, this is a skilful work by a confident and collectible artist showing much attention to detail. Presented framed/glazed, the condition of the painting is excellent for its age –please see condition report following - this painting looks fabulous displayed.
Size, medium and condition: Size: from front elevation, viewable painting 33.5 x 24.5cm (13.5 x 9.5 inches), frame 46 x 37.5cm (18 x 14.75 inches). Medium, watercolour on art paper, framed behind a slip frame; in excellent condition, the work is dry, no foxing noticed, soft colours appear colourfast and not faded; in its original solid wood frame with pine backing boards, shows minor age related wear. |
