Early Bijin Triptych

Artist: Toyokuni I
Format: Oban triptych: each sheet 15" x 10.25" approx

Subject: An extremely elegant early Toyokuni design, with two bijin performing a mitate of a sword fight, watched by ladies of the upper class. This early design shows the strong influence of Toyokuni's master Toyohiro and the elongated elegance of Kiyonaga.

A magnificent triptych.

Publisher: Wakasaya Yoichi (Wakaya)

Date: early 1790's

Condition: Full size with huge margins. Light wear. Superficial soils. Generally good state.

Colour: Fine, the fugitive purple and blue still fresh. Light oxidation to the pink of the engawa.

Impression: Fine with gauffrage.


Estimated Value: £3000 - £5000
