The frame appears to be original, it measures 28 inches wide X 22 inches high. There are several small chips to the decorative molding. When the wood backing was removed it revealed two newspapers, the Boston Globe dated December 2, 1900 and the Boston Transcript dated November 8, 1900.

The painting measures 19-1/2 inches wide X 13 inches high (sight). There is some discoloration and foxing in the upper sky location. The painting has no other damage or repairs. The only reference found when searching for 'S.Kawai' was a Shinzo Kawai (1867-1936) who painted in America and Japan. But I can not guarantee this signature or painting is his.
