Description
This woodblock print of a Japanese street scene during rainy weather is signed on the back by its Japanese artist, Yokouchi. The print, which is believed to be an original because ink has bled through the back, was framed in 1951. According to information written on loose brown paper between the print and frame backing, the print was bought in Yokohama in 1937. A label on the brown paper is marked Pictures & Framing and The Rike-Kumler Company, which was a Dayton, Ohio, department store; also on that label is the date 2/26/51. The picture is surrounded by a mat and under glass in the wood frame, which has been painted black, white and red and measures about 15 and 3/8 inches in width, almost 20 and 7/8 inches in height and about 1 inch in depth. The print appears to be in good condition; the mat and/or glass has some small stains, and the frame has scratches and chips down to bare wood. The frame includes a wire hanger, one side of which has come loose.
Later, the owner must have bleached it (lost edition text on verso):
Ginnosuke YOKOUCHI - Japanese Woodblock Print
Asakusa Kannon in Rain 1935 Self Carved, Printed / Published
VERY RARE, this print is among the 8 known woodblock prints by YOKOUCHI. 6 of the 8 can be viewed at hanga.com. Ginnosuke YOKOUCHI. 1870-1942, is known for his watercolor paintings, the last two pics. It is important to know this to understand the COMPLEXITY of his woodblock prints and why they resemble a watercolor painting. You'll find his woodblock prints to have a Hiroshi YOSHIDA feel. YOSHIDA and HASUI were among his contemporaries. YOKOUCHI was an expert carver. His skill for detail and the ability to make wet stones 'feel' wet and the bricks to have a heavy and aged appearance is UNMATCHED. This print has survived because of an American teacher in 1935 took a trip to Yokohama and returned with this print. All of the remaining printed inventory and the original blocks are assumed to have perished before the end of the war. The overall condition of this print is FINE +++. Noted is the expected age toning. Pics shown are accurate. The paper size is: 11 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches or 28.7 x 41.3 cm. This is a FULL sized print with full margins.
