Kuchi-e: The Severed Head Artist: Tomioka Eisen Format: Aiban yoko-e: 9" x 13" approx
Subject: A bizarre design with an ancient bearded European man showing a severed head to a formally dressed European man.
Tomioka Eisen was born in Nagano prefecture under the name of Hidetaro. He went to Tokyo to study drafting and was employed by the army as a civilian. Later he resigned from the army and became a full time illustrator. Most of his works were illustrations for newspapers, journals and kuchi-e.
