Catalog ID: 7787 Artist: Kawase Hasui Title: Snow on Miyajima Shrine Print Type: Original Japanese Woodblock Print Series Title: Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series Edition No: First Date: 1928 Publisher: S. Watanabe Reference No: Hotei #139 Size: 10 x 15-1/2 " Condition: Very fine. Notes: First state with small, square Watanabe copyright seal in the left margin, above the title.
As explained by Narazaki, "The subject of this snowscape is the famous gate (Torii) of the Itukushima Shrine, and it contrasts with a row of traditional inns and the mountains on the opposite bank that are blurred in the snow. The sea is calm and shallow; the waves are broken by the oars of the rowboat. The gate's vermilion reflection plays on the surface of the ripples, and the gate's color effectively imbues the image with a warmness".
Miyajima is located in Hiroshima Prefecture.
