作家 梶田半古
（かじたはんこ）
明治３年（一八七○）～大正６年（一九一七）東京に生れ、同地で没。本名は錠次郎。
はじめ四条派の鍋田玉英に師事し、のち鈴木華邨について学び、さらに岡倉天心の日本美術院で研究を重ねた。日本青年絵画協会の創立に参加。写実的な風俗画を得意とし、また新聞小説などに挿絵などを描き、新鮮で優艶な作風で知られた。代表作には『春宵怨図』（東京国立博物館）など。

梶田半古は明治30年頃から40年にかけて文芸雑誌の口絵を数多く手がけています。特に『文芸倶楽部』、『新小説』、『ムラサキ』などの口絵が知られています。「王夫人」は中国故事人物になぞらえて、女学生が琴を持つ様を表しています。半古は自分でデザインした服を娘達に着せたり、「風俗の改良」という記事を読売新聞に発表して新しい衣服を提案するなど、デザイナーとしての感覚にも優れていました。半古は台東区下谷に生まれ、工芸図案の下絵などを描くかたわら、新聞挿絵を描き、読売新聞社社員時代には人気挿絵作家となっています。その一方、展覧会に出品を続け、明治31年には日本美術院創立に参加、弟子には小林古径、前田青邨らがいました。
