Hello, recently I bought an oban size Woodblock Print Book: "The Tokaido Shank's Mare Album With Note", by Jippensha Ikku with sixty woodblock prints from 1918. I have attached you some pics. My question is: Who is the artist ? The prints are not signed and there is no artist given in the preface. Is it Jippensha Ikku himself or maybe Hiroshige III ? Any help is very appreciated. Best regards
Bernhard Brinker
Dear Bernhard,
These prints are by Tamenobu and most prints should have his two artist seals "tame" & "nobu". The title-sheet with the two farmers imitate photographs. The rest of the prints are in the traditional style of ukiyo-e landscapes.
I hope this book has the complete set. They are getting rare, these complete series. Most of them are seperated by dealers who sell them individualy. You know … then they make more money.
Cherrish them ! They might be the last …
