Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908)


Mitsui miyako no nishiki - Mitsui-brocade pictures from the capitol city.
Title: The seasons and their fashions.

12 woodblock prints and a title page as a picture handscroll.
At twelve pictures ladies and girls are shown in different surroundings doing various activities, always dressed suitable for the season. The title page shows an opened book with flowers in the background.

Signature: Toshikata.
Seal: Shô, Setsu.
Publisher: Akiyama Buemon, Tokyo.

Date: 1896/97.
Size: 13 Aiban as a picture handscroll.

Perfect impression and fresh colours with much silver, gradations of colour (bokashi), and relief printing.
Excellent condition. Paper sometimes a little bit time-stained at the margins.
First edition of this series, ordered by the business house Mitsui.

Series Information: 
Toshikata was commissioned to create a series of 12 domestic scenes when Mitsui Clothing Store (Mitsui Gofuku) changed its name from Echigoya in 1893 (Today, Mitsui is one of Japan's largest corporations). This collection was released once more in 1904 when the store became known as Mitsukoshi. The edition by "Mitsukoshi" was featured in the reference book of the Muller Collection. Most examples of this print are folded, having originally been bound into a book format.
