Important Mica Ground Double Bust Portrait

Artist: Utamaro I
Format: Oban tate-e: 14.25" x 9.5"

Subject: Ukiyo nanatsume awase series, 'Six Zodiac Pairs in the Floating World. Each of the six prints from this magnificent mica background, Utamaro set depicts two adults with two Zodiac animals, seven years apart (hence the seven in the title), in this instance Rat and Horse, with two bijin and a pet white Rat and a child holding a hobby-horse toy. The conjunction of the birth sign with the sexagenary cycle (7th year after) was considered auspicious of great luck. A museum quality, world-class Utamaro for an important collection.

Condition: Very slightly trimmed on lateral margins. Usual wear to mica (but generally well retained for a print from this period). A repaired wormhole. Small areas of thinning around face of child. Damaged corner top left, repaired. Light soils and wear. Good state

Colour: Very good

Impression: Fine impression with mica ground
