Description "Tokaido Meisho Hiza Kurige" (Famous Places of Tokaido; Shanks Mare) Station Hara. This series depicts the scenes from the popular novel, "Tokaido-chu Hiza Kurige" (Shanks Mare) by Jippensha Ikku. The mis-adventures by the funny travellers, Mr.Yaji and Mr. Kita who single-handedly demolished all the inns along the Tokaido but not even arrested. They are the two guys on the lower middle in this picture.

東海道名所膝栗毛 原
為信画 製作年、版元不明 横大判錦絵
このシリーズは名所と記されているが、その後の膝栗毛の字が示す様に、弥次さん、喜多さん二人が各宿の中に登場し、宿の様子や出来事をコミカルに描き、宿駅名の白内枠の中には狂歌が一首添えられている。
原の図は馬子と馬に乗った人、二組の大きな荷物を担く人足、遍路らしき二人の女性、前を急ぐ飛脚、二八そばの看板のかかった店でくつろぐ旅人等、宿のにぎわいの様子が描かれ、中央下には主人公、弥次さん、喜多さんの御両人も小さく描かれている。
原の狂歌には
「志ゅくの名の 者羅一者ひ尓 弥二が二と 喜多八が名の 二八そ者喰ふ」
（しゅくのなの はらいっぱいに やじがにと きたはちがなの にはちそばくふ ）
と歌われている。
二八そばは、本来はそば粉八うどん粉二の割で作ったそばを指すが、後にはそば粉二、うどん粉八の割で作ったそばを言った。又、江戸末期には値段が一杯十六文であった事から「二八・十六」で二八はその価を示すと考えられた。二八のぶっかけ等ともいう。十返舎一九の東海道中膝栗毛の原の中にそばを食べる場面が登場する。
本シリーズの製作年、版元名は不明で作画者「為信」 の詳細もわからない。ただ名前から察して、上方浮世絵師、長谷川貞信の流れをくむ幕末明治初期の浮世絵師ではないかと思われる。 |
