Artist: KITANO TSUNETOMI Title: Heron Maiden Print Type: Original Japanese Woodblock Print Date: 1925 (first edition), late 1920s (later edition), 1980s (Ishukankokai publisher)
Reference No: The New Wave, p. 133 Size: 21 3/8 x 14 1/2" (paper) Notes: Signed upper left: "Tsunetomi-hitsu". Carved by Yamana Ryoko. Printed by Matsano Kossui. Copyright of Nezu Seitaro.
A beautiful example of the FIRST EDITION of this scarce print will have the edition number hand-written in the edition box at the bottom of the print and (usually) a red artist's seal beside the signature at the top left, which appears to be hand-applied because its position on the print varies. The 2nd edition has the edition box left blank (no hand-written edition number) and usually has no red artist seal.
It would be quite easy for a less-ethical seller to "doctor" the 2nd editions by adding a fake edition number into the edition cartouche.
With "gofun" (splashed white ink). A 20TH C. MASTERPIECE! NOTE: Posthumous printings by Ishukankokai have the publisher details in the left margin. |

| Notes (this edition)?: |
The following information was taken from the original web listing of this artwork. Note that there may be some inaccuracies:
No written edition number in the edition cartouche in the bottom margin, and no red artist seal in the image area, so this would be from a later (2nd?) edition. Original first edition examples are far rarer than this edition.
