This scene was republished by Ishiwata koitsu using recarved blocks and signed with his "Yoshimi" signature, thus dating it to the 1950s. The publisher of the Ishiwata version was probably not Watanabe. |

Guaranteed original Japanese woodblock print
ARTIST: Tsuruoka Kakunen
SUBJECT: Parrot (numbered edition: 57/100, signed, dated & numbered in pencil)
PUBLISHER: Watanabe (print bears the Watanabe "D" seal)
DATE: 1940
PROVENANCE: Obtained directly from the artist's family
SIZE: 9.75" x 19.75"
CONDITION: Excellent color, impression, condition.
NOTE: Kakunen was a shin hanga artist who did only a handful of designs including several San Franciso subjects. That Watanabe (publisher of Hasui, Shinsui, etc.) published his work is testament to how skilled an artist he was. His prints are generally hard to locate. This design may be his most popular.
