You are bidding on a Japanese woodblock print “Osaka Municipal Office” which is the 32nd of the Series “Thirty-six Views of Osaka” signed by the famous early Showa artist Rasaku Akamatsu (1898-1953). This woodblock print comes with a small pamphlet that says “The Nakanoshima islet, surrounded by urban canals, has a lovely park, city hall, prefectural library, and many other institutions. Number 31 The Osaka City Hall” Rinsaku Akamatsu was born in Tsuyama City in the Okayama Prefecture and studied Western-style paintings under Yamauchi Gusen at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. His woodblock prints are collected by the British Museum. The British Museum collection also includes portfolio of prints of nude from his drawings published by Bunendo in 1940." from “Modern Japanese Prints 1912-1989” by Lawrence Smith; Published by British Museum Press. A detailed biography of Rinsaku Akamatsu can be found on any search engine. The size of this woodblock print is 14 3/4 X 10 1/4 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. This woodblock print is attached to a backing folder only at the top edge of the woodblock print. Ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the original Japanese mulberry paper. Four borders (margins) of the print are intact. The artist’s signature is at the lower right edge of the print. The size of this backing folder is 19 x 13 ½ inches. Although there are very minor wrinkles on the folder, this woodblock print is in excellent condition.
