Beauty Applying Lipstick, 1920
Hashiguchi Goyo, 20th century master-
With the permission of Goyo’s heirs, a couple small commemorative runs of his prints were produced. These prints are also very rare today. But, they offer an opportunity to collect a Goyo woodblock reprint at a cost more in line with most collectors’ budgets. These reprints were produced to the same exacting standard of Goyo’s originals. Expert carvers were contracted to produce the highest quality wood blocks and printers meticulously reprinted Goyo’s originals with the same attention to quality and detail. These reprints are on beautiful, hand made paper printed with the same colors and mica detail as Goyo’s originals. The prints offered tonight in our auctions are from one of those reprint sets.
This Print; Beauty Applying Lipstick- Lovely Goyo print of a beauty applying lipstick in a hand held mirror. She is wearing a fine, formal kimono, her hair carefully pinned up with a decorative crest pinned on. Beautiful soft color in the woman’s kimono and fine detail set off against the soft pink background. This background treated with shimmering mica as was the original. A wonderful print displaying Goyo’s mastery of the female portrait.
Signed- Goyo-ga Image size- 10 3/8" x 15 3/8" (+ full margins) Sheet size- 11 3/8" x 16 1/4" Condition- Perfect condition with no flaws to note. Excellent color, no fading, fine linework. This print has been stored only, never framed.

A Note on the 1970's/80's restrikes:
Tanseisha edition:
One of the 12-print sets, titled "Hashiguchi Goyo 60-Year Memorial) was published in an edition size of only 150 and is dated 1981, December 1st. I assume this to be the first edition by Tanseisha. It is obvious that Tanseisha subsequently published other sets after this date, using different printers. One of these later editions included an extra print, so a 13-print edition.
Yuyudo editions:
A 6-print set of bijin-ga in blue canvas tatou album with edition size of 750.
A 12-print edition, size unconfirmed.
A 2-print set of large-size scenes "Hand Mirror" and "Yabakei" with edition size of around 500.
Iwasaki Shoten:
Published "Woman Combing Her Hair" in an edition size of 180 in 1988, October 20 (see database entry 46012).
Watanabe Shoichiro: Watanabe has recently (2017 or earlier) started publishing some of the Goyo scenes.
